Emirates Golf Club
Located
on the outskirts of the city,
The Emirates Golf Club (started in 1988),
houses the Middle East’s first championship grass
course every golfer’s delight. It plays host to
the annual PGA Desert Classic, a venue for top
players from the world over. Planned by a noted
American course designer and is both challenging and
fair to both the professional and the amateur
golfer. The main 18-hole course is 7,100 yards,
playing to a par of 72 with 6 lakes interspersed as
obstacles to 9 of the holes adding to the beauty of
the turf. The course, from the gentle 418-yard par 5
first hole to the challenging par 5 eighteenth
across a lake to a double green it meets every
golfer’s expectations. The club offers equipment
hire and bookings (via hotels and tour operators)
for non-members, outside the peak timings.
Even
the most experienced players face a challenge at the
new 9-hole course-par of 37 (to which another 9
holes were added in 1996) which has plenty of water
hazards and bunkers. The extensive 5500 square metro
club house building in the shape of a group of
Bedouin tents is a prominent feature.
