Dubai - Yesterday
A major port with a free trade zone and a harbour which could support any sort of industrial activity in future, with enough area in the background to develop into a strong, non-oil, industrial production base.
Dredging and deepening of the entrance to the creek was started in the fifties. And the first bridge across the creek was constructed in the sixties. Jebel Ali site was selected as the most suitable place to develop as an industrial harbour. The construction of Mina Jebel Ali was started in the seventies and became fully operational by the end of seventies.
Dubai - Today
Open economy, high per capita income and a huge annual income characterise Dubai’s economy. Its' income is no longer totally dependent on the oil industry; and in fact, it is not only recognized as an Oil state but also as a Trading Hub. As the Trade and Commerce developed along with the Banking Sector, the Government gave priorities for the development of the IT sector. The major developments in the city today is related to the growth of Information Technology in Dubai. Growth of e-Banking as a result of IT development in banking sector in UAE has been astounding.
There are reports that internet users resort to e-banking more than that in the US. Pyramid, a Division of Economist Intelligence Unit found that while e-banking in UAE is at 21% that in US is only at 17%.
What could be the next step for a discerning Emirate with dynamic economy and an insatiable zest for modernization? That is the challenge of the day and Dubai decided to meet it head on - the challenge poised in the new millennium by embarking on a brave decision to build The City of the Future.
