Culture and Heritage
Courtesy and hospitality are
bywords for Dubai and it is among the most tolerant
and liberal of Islamic societies. The city has
thrived on the perfect blend of age-old Islamic
traditions and post-modern developments and
innovations. A glimpse of the culture can be seen
from the various mosques that dot the city,
especially the Jumeirah mosque and also in the
faithful practices during the holy month of Ramadan.
The people of Dubai derive strength and direction
from the ideals of Islam and expect visitors to
return this in the form of respect to their customs.
Gone are the days when women were
not allowed to move freely and were discriminated
against. The dress code has been relaxed although
people are expected to dress modestly avoiding
vulgar or revealing clothes. The local costume
includes headdress and robes.
As in the culture of every
country, poetry, arts, music and dance form an
important part of Arabian heritage. Festivities mark
celebrations and occasions like weddings, which are
conducted amidst much pomp and splendour. The
traditional sports and games have survived the test
of time and to this day, events like camel racing,
dhow racing and falconry are very popular. The
culture and heritage of the land has been preserved
in the museums of the city.
